The CBlue tertiary building, located in the Ecolys industrial estate near Namur, won the Green Solutions Awards International Grand Prize (new construction category) in Dubai during COP 28.
Several factors motivated the jury in awarding this prestigious prize to CBlue: resilient architecture, energy autonomy, and above all the building materials used.
The building is made from a combination of glued CLT and glulam post-and-beam timber, produced locally in Belgium. The optimisation of materials, with a focus on mixed use, meant that the right materials were used, in the right place, in the right quantity, and Stabilame played a major role in this with its production design office.
The environmental validation of the wood materials used has been taken into account, as this avoids any greenwashing. For example, Stabilame’s glued laminated timber (CLT) uses PEFC-certified wood, has been awarded the biosourced label (98%), and has a B-EPD that can be used to calculate the building’s environmental impact in TOTEM (Belgium), or the equivalent in France (FDES in the INIES database). Stabilame glulam beams also have PEFC certification and B-EPD.
Stabilame shares this prestigious award with architect Maxime Verwilghen, the building’s owner, and Menuiserie Riche for its wooden window frames (PEFC, biosourced label and B-EPD/FDES).
The award of this prize to a 2-storey commercial building shows the way for other projects, as all the principles are fully replicable.
